Planning a trip to the United Kingdom? If you're a U.S. or Canadian passport holder, you'll need to apply for a UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) before your visit. Whether you're heading to England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland, this document is required for entry.
The UK ETA is a digital travel authorization linked to your passport. It’s designed to enhance border security, and without it, airlines may deny boarding. It’s different from the ETIAS, which is expected to launch in 2026.
Who needs a UK ETA?
You’ll need to apply if:
- You’re a U.S. or Canadian passport holder
- You’re visiting the UK (England, Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland) during your EF Adventures tour or independent travel
You do not need a UK ETA if:
- You’re only transiting through the UK during a layover
- You are only traveling in the Republic of Ireland
How to apply
You’re responsible for applying for your UK ETA before departure. The process is quick and entirely online.
To apply:
- Use the official UK ETA app or the UK government website.
- Submit the required documents, including a photo of your passport and a picture of yourself
- No need to include flight or hotel details
Need help with the application? Check out our UK ETA walkthrough guide for step-by-step instructions.
After you apply
- You’ll receive a confirmation email once approved—keep it for your records

- You don’t need to send a copy to EF Adventures
Cost and processing time
- The ETA costs £16 (about $20 USD or $29 CAD)
- This cost is subject to change after the publishing of this article. Please refer to the cost on the application for exact pricing.
- Pay by credit or debit card during the application
- Processing usually takes 3 business days, but we recommend applying at least 30 days before departure
Validity
- Your ETA is valid for 2 years (or until your passport expires)
