Starting in late 2026, travelers heading to Europe will need to take note of a new requirement: the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS).
This isn’t a visa—it’s a travel authorization designed to enhance border security. The European Union hasn’t set an exact date for when this will go into effect, but it could roll out as early as the beginning of the year.
Here’s what you need to know:
- Who needs it? Passport holders from over 60 visa-exempt countries, including the U.S. and Canada, will need to apply for ETIAS before visiting 30 European countries. If you’re planning to visit multiple countries that require ETIAS, you’ll only need to complete the form once.
- How does it work? The application process will be online and straightforward. You’ll provide basic details like your personal info, travel plans, and passport information. The cost is 7 euros, and most applications will be approved within four days. Once approved, the authorization is valid for three years or until your passport expires—whichever comes first.
